Beef heifers grazing behavior and herbage intake in natural grassland under rotational grazing Ciência Rural
Barbieri,Cezar Wankura; Quadros,Fernando Luiz Ferreira de; Jochims,Felipe; Kuinchtner,Bruno Castro; Carvalho,Thiago Henrique Nicola de; Casanova,Pedro Trindade; Fernandes,Augusto Miranda; Pereira,João Bento.
It was evaluated the effect of two rest intervals between grazing occupations in rotational grazing; 375 and 750 DD (degree-days); based on the cumulative thermal sum necessary for leaf expansion of native grasses of two functional groups over the grazing behavior variables from beef heifers with 12 months old. The experiment was conducted as a completely randomized block design, with two treatments, three replications and measures repeated over time. Grazing behavior was assessed in three occasions (Nov 2011, Jan and Mar 2012), with 24h each. The herbage intake was estimated using an external marker (Cr2O3). The leaf mass was similar among the rest intervals, with a mean of 1261kg DM ha-1. The average grazing time was 627.4min day-1 and bite rate was 37.1...

Grazing management strategies for massaigrass-forage peanut pastures: 3. definition of sward targets and carrying capacity R. Bras. Zootec.
Andrade,Carlos Mauricio Soares de; Garcia,Rasmo; Valentim,Judson Ferreira; Pereira,Odilon Gomes.
This study was carried out to define sward management targets for mixed Massaigrass (Panicum maximum x P. infestum, cv. Massai) and forage peanut (Arachis pintoi Ac 01) pastures in the Western Brazilian Amazon. Seasonal variation in the pasture carrying capacity was also analyzed. Pastures were intermittently stocked at three daily herbage allowance levels (9.0, 14.5 and 18.4% of live weight) from October 2002 to December 2003. Sward targets were defined in terms of the sward condition that best conciliated the grass-legume balance, the maintenance of the structure of Massaigrass tussocks and the equilibrium between forage production and utilization. For the Western Brazilian Amazon conditions, the following sward management targets can be recommended for...

Grazing patterns on signalgrass pasture according to location of cattle feces R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Gomes,Virgílio Mesquita; Braz,Thiago Gomes dos Santos; Silva,Simone Pedro da; Albino,Ronan Lopes; Santos,Andreza Luzia; Silva,Guilherme Portes.
This study was conducted to evaluate the defoliation patterns on B. decumbens cv. Basilisk (signalgrass) tiller as a function of influence of feces deposited naturally by cattle. The signalgrass was managed with an average height of 25 cm, under continuous stocking and variable stocking rate. Interval and intensity of defoliation, grazing efficiency and forage loss were evaluated in two sites on pasture - one close and the other distant from feces. The completely randomized block design with three replications was adopted. The defoliation rate of the pasture site close to feces was 40% lower than at that distant from feces. This response pattern was similar to defoliation intensity of leaf blade. The leaf blade of the tiller close to feces also achieved...

Pasture characteristics of Italian ryegrass and milk production under different management strategies PAB
Miguel,Marcolino Frederico; Ribeiro Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes; Crestani,Steben; Ramos,Fabiana da Rocha; Genro,Tereza Cristina Moraes.
The objective of this work was to assess the effects of the sward structure of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), during the first grazing cycle, on its morphological and bromatological characteristics throughout the growing season, and on the performance of dairy cows. The treatments consisted of two structures obtained as a function of canopy-light interception: high-light interception (HLI) and low-light interception (LLI), with different pre-grazing heights in the first grazing cycle. Pasture was managed under rotational grazing with a herbage allowance not below 30 kg dry matter (DM) per cow per day. Three grazing cycles, with a grazing interval of 30 days, were evaluated. Pre-grazing herbage mass was greater (2,240 vs. 1,656 kg ha-1 DM), but the...

Relationship between diurnal grazing time and herbage intake in dairy cows in rotational grazing Ciência Rural
Ribeiro Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes; Setelich,Elena Apezteguia; Crestani,Steben; Dias,Kamila Maciel; Mantovani,Carolina; Valenti,Joana.
The aim of this study was describe the relationship between grazing time and herbage intake and identify tools to grazing management of dairy cows grazing Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) on a rotational grazing method. Six dairy cows in mid-lactation period were allowed to graze paddocks during three grazing cycles. During each cycle cows grazed two paddocks with 9 days of occupation by paddock and an herbage allowance of 30kg DM cow-1 day-1. Measurements were made in the last 9 days of each period and during intervals between cycles cows grazed an adjacent area with a mixed of temperate species. It was compared three grazing cycles and cows eating similar herbage amount with different daily grazing time. Independently of herbage intake, daily...

Sousa,D.O.C.; Santos,M.E.R.; Fonseca,D.M.; Macedo Junior,G.L.; Silva,S.P..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu syn. Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu (Marandu palisadegrass) in late winter on pasture structure, apparent selectivity, and sheep production during spring and early summer. The conditions of deferred pastures at the end of winter were: low (15.1cm and 4600kg/ha of DM), medium (23.2cm and 5940kg/ha of DM), high (31.4cm and 7640kg/ha of DM) and high/mowed (31.3cm and 7200kg/ha of DM, mowed to 8cm). The experiment was conducted in split plot design (sward conditions at the end of winter: low, medium, tall and tall/lowered) during time (early, middle and late spring/summer) and completely randomized design with three replications. The percentages of live leaf...

Structural characteristics of marandu palisadegrass swards subjected to continuous stocking and contrasting rhythms of growth Scientia Agricola
Mesquita,Priscila de; da Silva,Sila Carneiro; Paiva,Adenilson José; Caminha,Fábio Olegário; Pereira,Lilian Elgalise Techio; Guarda,Vítor Del'Álamo; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do.
The concept of sward target has been used recently to characterise grazing management practices, but its efficiency to monitor and control sward structure questioned since it corresponds to a single sward structural feature, usually sward surface height. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate sward structure and its patterns of variation throughout the year on continuously stocked marandu palisadegrass swards maintained at 30 cm and subjected to contrasting rhythms of growth from January 2007 to April 2008. Treatments corresponded to three nitrogen application rates (150, 300 and 450 kg ha-1 of N) plus the control (no N fertilisation), and were allocated to experimental units according to a complete randomised block design, with four...

Sward structure, light interception and herbage accumulation in forage peanut cv. Belmonte subjected to strategies of intermittent grazing management Animal Sciences
Brunetti, Henrique Bauab; Carvalho, Lucas da Rocha; Chiavegato, Marília Barbosa; Silva, Sila Carneiro da.
Nitrogen fertilization ensures productivity and persistency of pastures, but may be expensive. Perennial forage peanut, becomes an interesting alternative for N supply. Little is known about its use under grazing. The objective of this study was to evaluate regrowth process of forage peanut using an experimental protocol analogous to tropical forage grasses under rotational grazing. Treatments corresponded to two pre- (95% and maximum canopy light interception – LI95% and LIMax) and two post-grazing (post-grazing heights of 40 and 60% of pre-grazing height) conditions, in a 2x2 factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design (n = 4). Targets of LI pre-grazing affected  pre-grazing height and LI post-grazing. The residual sward LAI did not vary,...
